Gannett-HomeTown deal faces antitrust scrutiny

Federal antitrust enforcers are scrutinizing the proposed purchase of HomeTown Communications Network by Gannett Co., parent company of the Detroit News. Gannett owns three dailies in Michigan already, and dissenters say it would monopolize advertising rates and editorial products in this market. Ben Burns, chair of Wayne's Journalism department, said, \"The acquisition does not bode well for the quality of journalism. Particularly, because HomeTown is one of the best newspaper groups in terms of editorial quality - in the country.\" He said, "The Gannett folks don\'t have a reputation for improving products that they buy.\"
